My Simple Rules for Negotiations

I just realized that I never shared on my own blog my “simple rules” for negotiations. Here they are:
1. State the obvious. (Not everyone may be thinking it.)
2. When unsure of what to say, ask a question. (This includes feeling uncomfortable or angry.)
3. Say what you have to say; then be quiet. (Be comfortable with silence.)
4. Share freely in front of others, not behind closed doors. (Build trust.)
5. Look for ways to say “yes”, not “no.” (It’s a mindset.)
6. Last, give what you can unconditionally. (Do not expect something in return.)
